From overcoming the odds to achieving my dreams, I’ve learned that every challenge provides opportunities for growth and transformation.
My life didn’t start in the easiest of circumstances, but it became a source of strength rather than a limitation. I was born premature with an underdeveloped diaphragm. Thus began a five-month journey in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Minnesota. Thanks to the intervention of my grandfather, a chief cardiologist at the University, a skilled vascular surgeon performed a radical surgery that granted me the chance to survive.
Doctors cautioned my parents, suggesting I pursue more sedentary hobbies as I grow up so as not to strain myself. But my parents and I refused to let those words define me. When I was just 11 years old, I ran my first 5K with my dad. Running became a passion, completing three marathons and three half marathons in my life. To overcome such odds set the tone for my future. I never set limitations on myself and always set out to pursue my dreams fearlessly.
For the longest time, my dream was to become a sports broadcaster. I've always had a passion for sports, reading the sports section of the newspaper every morning to learn more about the athletes, where they were from, who they were traded for, and where they went to college.
Earning my graduate degree from Brown College of Broadcasting, my first broadcasting job was a radio position in Gillette, Wyoming. The very first story I covered in my broadcasting career was the arrest of OJ Simpson in 1994—it was quite the start of my career. Two months later, I secured my first TV role as the weekend sports anchor in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Living the dream, I found myself in Macon, Georgia, where I had the privilege of covering Tiger Woods' first Masters win in 1997. After seven years in sports broadcasting, I transitioned to news broadcasting for six years. I worked as a news reporter and anchor in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and then took on my final position in Tampa, Florida. Along the way, I had some notable achievements, including two Emmy Awards, one for News Story of the Year and another appearing in the Netflix series Making a Murderer as a reporter.
After a successful career in broadcasting, I was ready for a change of pace and a new goal to strive for. In 2007, I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, to work alongside a friend in commercial real estate. By 2009, I transitioned to residential real estate—from the very beginning, I knew this was the better fit for me. My broadcasting background became an asset, equipping me with the skills to make people feel at ease. In the same way I had to earn the trust of my interviewees on television, ensuring they felt comfortable and respected, I now applied those skills to help clients feel confident and secure when purchasing a home with me.
Connecting with people and finding a way to help them is what brings me true fulfillment. In real estate, I found limitless opportunities to do just that! If there is one thing I have learned throughout my life, it is that I thrive when faced with a challenge. In real estate, no two days are alike. With different clients, goals, contracts, and negotiations, I am constantly problem-solving and tailoring my approach to get the job done. In this ever-changing industry, my skills, knowledge, and resourcefulness are constantly tested, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
The greatest achievements of my life were a direct result of my perseverance and belief that with the right mindset and work ethic, anything is possible. As I look to the future, I plan to continue growing my real estate business and connecting with more people in the community I love. In my free time, I love to golf, hike, downhill ski, cheer on my Minnesota teams, and be with my pug, Harper!
Moving to Scottsdale in 2007 was a huge shift in my life, but one that I am grateful for every day. I absolutely love the greater Phoenix area and am proud to call it home. Having personally experienced the challenges of relocating across the country, some of my favorite clients to work with are those relocating to the area or first-time homebuyers. I have a unique perspective, knowing what newcomers are looking for and identifying the right neighborhoods and homes for their specific needs.
My own experiences with buying and selling homes have deeply influenced my approach to client service. I operate with a simple but profound philosophy: if a neighborhood isn't good enough for my parents, it's not good enough for my clients. This personal benchmark ensures I'm not just facilitating a transaction, but truly caring for the well-being of those I help. I guide my clients through each step and make sure they’re comfortable and informed. By planning ahead and taking proactive steps to avoid unnecessary problems, I help ensure a seamless, enjoyable experience!
Sincerely,
Steve Russell
